Japanese stocks rose, recovering from a late-morning slide after a U.S. trade adviser made a comment on China that confused the market.

Speaking in a Fox News interview on relations with China, Navarro made the comment, "It's over.” He later clarified that his words "had nothing at all to do with the Phase I trade deal, which continues in place." President Donald Trump followed with a tweet that "the China Trade Deal is fully intact.”

Topix +0.5% at 1,587.14 as of close in Tokyo; swung between gain of 1.2% and loss of 0.6%. Nikkei 225 +0.5% at 22,549.05.
