Stocks open with strong gains on optimism over economic reopening; Lowe's jumps 4%

Stocks opened with strong gains Wednesday, lifted by optimism over efforts to reopen the economy and well-received quarterly results from retailers.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average djia rose 291.37 points, or 1.2%, to 24,498.23, while the S&P 500 spx advanced 37.09 points, or 1.3%, to 2,960.03. The Nasdaq Composite comp was up 125.54 points, or 1.4%, to 9,310.64.

Shares of Lowe's Cos. low jumped 4.1% after it beat expectations for profit and sales.
