Japanese stocks swung between losses and gains in the morning session Tuesday, following the worst rout in the U.S. equity market since 1987 after President Donald Trump said that the coronavirus outbreak could push the U.S. economy into a recession.
The Topix index fluctuated between a loss of 3% and gain of 3.3%. The yen weakened versus the dollar, erasing much of its gain in the previous day.
Topix index +0.4% at 1,240.97 as of midday break in Tokyo. Nikkei 225 index -0.5% at 16,923.24.
