U.S. stocks ended sharply lower Thursday as a whipsaw week for equity markets continues.
Worries over the global spread of COVID-19 and its effect on the economy and supply chains continued to hang over the market, with transportation shares particularly hard hit in the session.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished above session lows but still dropped by around 969 points or 3.6%, to around 26, 122, according to preliminary figures, while the S&P 500 tumbled around 106 points, or 3.4%, to end near 3,024. The Nasdaq Composite lost around 280 points, or 3.1%, finishing the day near 8,739.
Airline shares suffered a broad selloff as carriers cut or temporarily cancel flights in Italy and parts of Asia. The U.S. Global Jets dropped 8.7%.
