Stock benchmarks opened at or near fresh all-time highs as investors continued to draw optimism from a preliminary U.S.-China trade deal struck last week, though questions remained over the details of the long-awaited "phase one" accord.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 146 points, or 0.5%, at 28,281, the S&P 500 index climbed 0.7% at 3,192, while the Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 0.7% to 8,799. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq carved out fresh intraday records at the start of trade Monday, while the Dow was less than 10 points from a fresh all-time intrasession peak. The U.S. economic calendar is bare on Monday, with only second-tier data set for release. The Empire State manufacturing index came in at 3.5, slightly higher than November's 2.9 reading.
