U.S. equities fluctuated near record highs as investors searched for signs of progress in China's comments about prospects for a "phase-one" trade deal. Treasuries and most European sovereign bonds rose.
The S&P 500 swung between gains and losses, while European and Asian stocks were mixed after China said that Sino-American trade negotiators “reached consensus” on certain issues in a phone call and agreed to stay in contact on the remaining points. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index struggled for traction, with gains in food and beverage firms offsetting declines in travel stocks.
The S&P 500 Index was little changed at 3,131.88 as of 9:32 a.m. New York time, the highest on record.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was little changed at 28,051.68, the highest on record.
The Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 1.3% to 8,632.40, the highest on record with the largest surge in more than six weeks.
