U.S. stocks extended modest gains Friday, with the benchmark S&P 500 index trading above its all-time closing high of 3,025.86 set on July 26, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was boosted by a jump in Intel stock after earnings beat estimates, as the busiest week of the third quarter corporate earnings reporting season winds down.
Geopolitical risks were also a concern with the European Union debating another delay to Brexit, but stocks also received a boost from reports the U.S. and China were close to finalizing some sections of a recently agreed trade deal.
The S&P 500 index % traded as high as 3,027.35, shy of its intraday record of 3,027.98, also set on July 26. The Dow Jones Industrial Average meanwhile, was around 188 pints higher at 26,993, a gain of 0.7% and below its all-time closing high of 27,359.16, also set in July. The Nasdaq Composite was up 52 points or 0.6% at 8,238.
