Equities traded near the highs of the day, led by health care and technology shares, as earnings season begins in earnest. The poundstrengthened as the U.K. and European Union moved closer to a Brexit deal.
The three main U.S. equity indexes all rose more than 1%, climbing alongside stocks in Europe, defying concern Beijing and Washington remain far apart in their quest for a trade deal. The S&P 500 topped 3,000 for the first time in three weeks.
The S&P 500 Index increased 1% to 2,996.92 as of 11:47 a.m. New York time, the highest in more than three weeks.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.9% to 27,035.57, the highest in more than three weeks.
The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 1.1% to 8,135.54, the highest in more than three weeks.
