Stocks rose Wednesday, with a rally in energy-sector shares leading the way to the upside.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose around 258 points, or 1%, to end around 26,035, according to preliminary figures, while the S&P 500 gained around 19 points, or 0.7%, to finish at 2,888. The Nasdaq Composite closed near 7,857, a gain of aroud 30 points, or 0.4%.
The beaten down S&P 500 energy sector rose 1.4%, finding support as oil rallied sharply following a larger-than-expected fall in weekly crude inventories.
Energy shares have been punished in August, with the sector down around 10% month-to-date, the worst performing of the S&P 500's 11 sectors.
