European stocks opened slightly lower Friday morning, as market participants closely monitored signs of progress in trade talks between the world's two largest economies.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 was down around 0.1 percent shortly after the opening bell, with most sectors and major bourses in negative territory.

Market focus is largely attuned to global trade negotiations, with little more than a week left before a U.S-imposed deadline for an agreement with China expires.
