U.S. stocks rose Friday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite ending in record territory after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell delivered a speech that struck a balanced tone on the outlook for monetary policy and underlined the strength of the U.S. economy.
The S&P 500 rose 0.6% to end around 2,874.69, according to preliminary figures, surpassing the previous record close of 2,872.87 set in January. The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.9% to finish near 7,945.98, marking its first record close since July 25. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended with a gain of around 133 points, or 0.5%, near 24,790.
For the week, the S&P rose 0.9%, while the Dow gained 0.5% and the Nasdaq jumped 1.7%.
