South Korean officials on Wednesday (27/5) reported the highest number of new corona viruses in the country in seven weeks, while South Korea relaxed its restrictions.

In his daily briefing in Seoul, South Korean Deputy Minister of Health Kim Kang-lip said 37 of the 40 new cases were related to recent trapping of nightclubs in Itaewon, a multicultural district in Seoul. Kim said the other three were infected from abroad.

All but four of these new cases were found in densely populated areas in Seoul, where officials fought hard against infections related to nightclubs, karaoke venues and e-commerce store companies.

Kim said relevant parties were publishing a warehouse related to the local e-commerce company Coupang, after finding a corona virus case report related to workers there. Kim said they agreed the company was not implementing regulations relating to Covid-19 at work, and they were examining 3,600 employees of the company.

South Korea has reported 268 deaths and 11,265 cases, after trying to cope with previous outbreaks.

The surge occurred while two million students returned to school on Wednesday (27/5).
