Seven million Californians living in and around San Francisco were ordered to live at home. This is the most drastic step taken to stop the spread of the corona virus.
"We know these steps will require daily life," said Mayor of San Francisco London Developing, Monday (3/16).
"This will be a defining moment for us and we must all be responsible for doing our part to protect us and transfer this virus by staying at home, unless it is very supportive for the outside," Breed said.
The order did not only concern the city of San Francisco, but also six surrounding areas in Northern California.
All shops and businesses will be closed except for important places like supermarkets and pharmacies.
San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said officers would take what he asked "to ask common sense of gratitude" to anyone who began to think about staying at home too long and had to leave the house.
Scott said the police would dispute what was considered minor, but it was "the last resort agreed."
Locked or prohibited entry and exit from the city will remain in effect until April 7.
