U.S. stocks edged higher Thursday to extend a weeklong rally, setting the stage for a fourth straight day of gains as investors shifted their focus from the rising coronavirus death toll to fresh developments in U.S.-China trade relations.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 36 points, or 0.1%, to trade at 29,328, after briefly touching a new intraday high, while the S&P 500 index rose 8 points, or 0.3% to 3,342 and the Nasdaq Composite index advanced 46 points, or 0.5% to 9,555.
For the week, the Dow is up 3.8%, the S&P 500 3.6%, and the Nasdaq has gained 4.4%. All three benchmarks are on pace for a fourth straight day of gains.
