Japan's Topix index fell in subdued trading, weighed by declines in electronics giants and banks.
Topix -0.2% to 1,729.42 at the close in Tokyo. Nikkei 225 little changed at 23,821.11. Yen little changed at 109.41 per dollar.
Trading volume on the benchmark measure was 21% below its 30-day average, while that for the Nikkei 225 Stock Average was 28% below its 30-day average. U.S. equities closed at a record high on Friday as investors counted down to the holiday break. The Topix is up 16% so far this year and climbed last week to its highest since October 2018.
Data over the weekend showed U.S. spending picked up in November and income gains topped projections, indicating household consumption will continue to be the economy’s main driver at year-end.
