U.S. stocks closed higher, with major benchmarks at new records, on reports the U.S. and China had struck an agreement to gradually cancel planned tariffs.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average added about 186 points, 0.7%, to close at 27,678.1, a new all-time high. The S&P 500 closed higher by more than 8 points, 0.3%, also touching a fresh record at 3,085. The Nasdaq rose more than 23 points, 0.3%, barely missing its own fresh high, at 8,434.
Shares of Expedia Group Inc. sat out the day's rally, losing nearly one-third of their value after worse-than-expected earnings.
