U.S. stocks edged higher midday Wednesday, but close to break-even levels, as investors weighted downbeat data on eurozone manufacturing activity that underlined worries over the health of the global economy with news that Chinese officials downplayed the significance of the cancellation of visits to U.S. farm states -- a move that had instigated losses in Friday’s session.

The S&P 500 rose 1 point, or less than 0.1%, to 2,993, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 14 points, or 0.1%, to 26,947, after coming off session lows. The Nasdaq Composite was virtually unchanged at 8,117.
