U.S. stocks opened slightly lower on Tuesday as investors watched for the European Central Bank's policy meeting later this week and for further developments on U.S.-China trade negotiations.

The S&P 500 fell 0.3% to 2,970. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 31 points, or 0.1%, to 26,805. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.5% to 8,046.

The ECB is expected to announce a slew of stimulus measures on Thursday even as members of its policymaking committee argue that additional easing may be counterproductive. In company news, shares of Ford Motor Co fell 4.3% after Moody's Investors Service downgraded the company into 'junk', or below-investment grade.
