Japan's Nikkei edged higher on Thursday morning in choppy trade as investors looked to profit guidance from corporate earnings and awaited a Bank of Japan policy decision.
The market is focused on the Bank of Japan's policy meeting later, which is expected to keep monetary policy steady.
The Nikkei share average rose 0.4 percent to 22,280.99 in midmorning trade, after opening a tad lower. The broader Topix rose 0.3 percent.
Eyes were on individual company earnings, which included those relying on Chinese demand such as factory automation machinery makers.
