U.S. stock indexes inched higher Thursday morning, but equity-market investors struggled for clear catalysts to help drive significant gains ahead of the start of quarterly results — set to kick off unofficially on Friday — amid further evidence of world-wide economic sluggishness.
Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged 21 points, or 0.1%, higher at 26,192, those for the S&P 500 index rose 3.5 points, or 0.1%, to 2,897.25, while Nasdaq-100 futures advanced 6.25 points to 7,647, a rise of roughly 0.1%.
On Thursday, S&P 500 index gained 10.01 points, or 0.4%, to end at 2,888.21 while the Nasdaq Composite rose 54.97 points, or 0.7%, to close at 7,964.24. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 6.58 points to 26,157.16 after spending most of the day in negative territory.
