U.S. stocks struggled for direction Tuesday as U.S. investors return from a three-day weekend as another round of U.S.-China trade talks begins in Washington.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 42 points, or 0.2%, to 25,842, while the S&P 500 indexwas off 2 points, or 0.1%, to 2,774. The Nasdaq rose 4 points, or 0.6%, to 7,477.
Gains last week were fueled in part by upbeat expectations surrounding U.S.-China trade negotiations. Top U.S. and Chinese officials met last week in Beijing. Talks are set to resume Tuesday in Washington.
President Donald Trump on Sunday tweeted about the trade talks, saying “Big progress being made on soooo many different fronts!”
