Japanese shares fluctuated after capping their best two-day advance since December and ahead of high-level trade talks between the U.S. and China scheduled later this week.
The Topix Index is advancing slightly to 1,590.24 in Tokyo.
Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. contributed the most to the index gain, increasing 1.1 percent. Atrae Inc. had the largest increase, rising 21.0 percent.
In midday trading, 1,143 of 2,125 shares rose, while 894 fell.
Nikkei 225 barely changed at 21,155.44.
The benchmark 10-year bond rose and the yield fell 0.8 basis points to -0.014 percent.
The MSCI AC Asia Pacific Index declined 0.2 percent.
