U.S. stocks trimmed early gains but ended higher, giving the S&P 500 a fourth straight win. Support was tied to continued optimism over U.S.-China trade talks under way in Beijing.
The S&P 500 rose around 0.3% to finish near 2,753, according to preliminary figures, while the Dow industrials advanced around 117 points, or 0.5%, end near 25,543. The Nasdaq Composite clung to a gain of 0.1% to close near 7,420.
The Dow was up 200 points at its session high, while the Nasdaq had threatened to exit a bear market but was unable to remain above the threshold of 7,431.50 needed to mark a 20% rise from its Dec. 24 low.
Shares of Activision Blizzard ended around 7% higher to lead S&P 500 gainers, boosted after announcing a restructuring plan.
