U.S. stock-index benchmarks were trading slightly lower as as investors watched fresh developments in clashes over tariffs between the U.S. and its global counterparts and digested another batch of corporate quarterly results, which have so far helped drive stocks up over recent sessions.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 58 points, or 0.2%, at 25,403, the S&P 500 index fell 0.1% at 2,837 and the Nasdaq Composite Index gave up 0.1% at 7,804.
Continued trade-war tensions have weighed on investors' sentiment. In corporate news, PepsiCo Inc.'s CEO Indra Nooyi will step aside as chief executive. Separately, Australian packaging company Amcor Ltd. is acquiring Bemis Co. Inc. in an all-stock deal valued at $6.8 billion, the companies said in a joint statement Monday.
