US stock-market indexes opened lower on Thursday as signs of heightened tensions between the US and China outweighed a batch of corporate results that have largely come in ahead of expectations.
The S&P 500 was 14 points, or 0.5%, lower to 2,799. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slumped 161 points, or 0.6%, to 25,171. The Nasdaq Composite Index declined 44 points, or, 0.6%, to 7,662 at the open.
Among the biggest decliners on the S&P 500, shares of TripAdvisor Inc. slid 13% after the company's earnings came in below expectations.
