The producer price index rose a modest 0.2% in April, indicating that inflation remains under wraps. Economists polled by MarketWatch had predicted a 0.3% gain. The increase in wholesale inflation over the past year was flat at 2.2%, the government said Thursday.
Wholesale prices rose last month for gas and services. Wholesale food costs fell 0.2%. Excluding food, energy and trade margins, the so-called core PPI rate rose 0.4% last month. The yearly rate of increase in core prices increased to 2.2% from 2%.
